Unlike most students, Big Mama founder Ramona MacLeod went to university later in life as a single parent. While there, she was astonished at the high price of textbooks, paying in excess of $1,200 per year. Those prices meant that she had to make some hard choices between what she needed for her education and what her family needed. She also experienced the frustration of trying to sell textbooks she had purchased. When she could, she borrowed textbooks or bought used textbooks to complete her courses and earn her degree. She still graduated with significant student debt.
Later, when her eldest son was graduating from high school, she thought about the challenges he would face juggling tuition and textbook costs. She also thought about the amount of debt he would have to assume to complete his education. She noticed that U.S. students could rent their textbooks but that Canadian students had no real options. Wanting something better for Canada's students, she decided to launch Big Mama to serve the needs of all Canadian students, including her son.
